2022 Domaine Yui A Rouge

Domaine Yui’s 2022 A Rouge captures an important early chapter for this small estate in Yoichi, Hokkaido. It is the first red release from the domaine’s A vineyard, planted in 2019, and brings together fruit from its first five blocks. The blend is 77% Pinot Noir, 19% Chardonnay and 4% Pinot Gris, fermented together rather than assembled as separate finished wines.

This unusual combination reflects the circumstances of the harvest: the quantities of Chardonnay and Pinot Gris were too small to vinify individually. The resulting wine was matured for twelve months in a new 228-litre Hungarian oak barrel from François Frères. Wild yeasts, no fining and no filtration form part of its production, while the producer describes an elegant red with expressive berry aromas and a deep colour.

At 12% alcohol, this 750ml bottle offers an engaging introduction to Hokkaido’s developing fine-wine scene and Domaine Yui’s distinctive interpretation of Pinot Noir. Try it alongside roast poultry, mushrooms or gently seasoned pork, allowing time in the glass for its aromas to develop.
